📖 The Fourths and Eighths Debate

Two students drew equal-sized paper gardens. One shaded three of four equal sections. The other shaded six of eight equal sections. At first, they argued about who had planted more because six was greater than three. They laid the drawings side by side and split each fourth into two equal parts. The shaded areas matched. Three fourths and six eighths named the same portion of the same-sized whole. They also noted that fractions alone would not prove equal actual areas if the original gardens had different sizes.
