📖 The Narrator at the Window
In a short story, an unnamed narrator watches a neighbor carry several empty boxes into a house. 'They must be moving away,' the narrator thinks. Later, the neighbor carries the boxes out filled with books and places them beside a sign reading 'Community Book Swap.' The narrator admits that the first explanation was only a guess. The reader sees the same events as the narrator but can reconsider them when the sign appears. The story reminds us that a character's thoughts are not always facts, even when that character tells the story.
1. What does the narrator first infer?
2. What detail changes the explanation?
3. Why should readers separate the narrator's thought from fact?
4. What theme is supported?
