📖 The Route with the Missing Ramp
An imaginary museum map marked the shortest route to an exhibit. The route included a short staircase, but the map did not show it. A visitor using a wheeled cart had to turn back. During revision, students added stair symbols and marked an alternate route without steps. They also checked that the alternate route actually connected to the exhibit. The shortest route remained on the map, but it was no longer presented as the only useful option. Good directions needed information about the path, not just its length.
1. What important feature is missing from the first map?
2. Why does the visitor turn back?
3. What two checks improve the alternate route?
4. What broader principle does the passage illustrate?
