📖 The Fraction of the Garden
In a model garden plan, two thirds of the whole area was assigned to vegetables. Half of that vegetable area was assigned to beans. A student labeled beans as one half of the whole garden. Her partner explained that the half referred only to the vegetable portion. Half of two thirds is one third, so beans occupied one third of the whole. They drew the garden as six equal sections: four for vegetables and two of those for beans. The picture showed the nested relationship. Whenever a fraction describes 'part of a part,' readers need to identify the whole each fraction refers to.
