📖 The Photograph Outside the Frame
An imaginary newspaper printed a close-up photograph of three people waiting beside a closed gate. The caption said a festival had attracted almost nobody. A wider photograph from the same moment showed a long line extending around the corner. The close-up itself was not invented, but its selection and caption encouraged a misleading conclusion. Students compared both images and the time they were taken. They concluded that a photograph can provide evidence while leaving out important context. To estimate attendance, they would need more than either picture alone, such as an entrance count or a clearly defined view of the whole gathering.
1. What important context does the close-up omit?
2. Is the close-up necessarily fabricated?
3. Why check that the images show the same moment?
4. What evidence would better establish attendance?
