📖 The Test with Three Trials
In a fictional paper-column test, Design A held 12, 14, and 13 counters across three trials. Design B held 8, 18, and 13. Both had a mean of 13 counters: each total was 39, divided by 3. Yet their results differed in consistency. A's range was 2, while B's range was 10. The team chose A for a demonstration because they wanted more predictable results in these tests. They did not claim A would always outperform B. The mean summarized one feature of the results; the spread helped answer a different question.
1. What is the mean for each design?
2. What is the range for each?
3. Why does the team prefer A for the demonstration?
4. Why is the mean alone insufficient for this choice?
✏️ Writing
Explain the team's choice using mean and range. Define both terms in your own words.
