Earth's axis is tilted as the planet orbits the Sun. When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, it receives more direct sunlight and longer days. At the same time, the Southern Hemisphere receives less direct sunlight. This is why the hemispheres experience opposite seasons.
